SBRT Lung Radiation Therapy
Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) delivers a precise, high dose of external-beam radiation in a small number of treatments while limiting dose to surrounding normal tissue. SBRT may be considered for selected patients with small lung tumors, including patients who are not good surgical candidates because of lung disease or other medical conditions. The radiation oncologist determines whether SBRT is appropriate.

- A customized support such as a Vac-Lok cushion helps reproduce your position.
- CT simulation maps the tumor and nearby organs. Additional pulmonary procedures, such as bronchoscopy, may be requested when clinically appropriate.
- The physician defines the target and organs to protect; the dosimetrist and medical physicist create and verify the plan.
- Image guidance confirms tumor location and positioning before radiation is delivered.
Before the First Treatment
- Complete your consultation.
- Complete CT simulation and individualized treatment planning.
- The care team completes dose calculations and quality checks.
During Treatment
Imaging confirms your position before each treatment. You will meet with the doctor and nurse during the SBRT course to discuss any symptoms.
- Possible short-term effects include mild fatigue, swallowing discomfort if the esophagus is in the treatment area, or a dry cough.
- Tell the care team about symptoms that persist or worsen. Seek urgent or emergency care as directed, or call 911 for a medical emergency.
After Treatment
- Short-term side effects often improve within 4–6 weeks, although recovery varies.
- Continue routine care with your primary care clinician and other members of your cancer-care team.
