How We Keep Your Treatment Accurate

• The radiation oncologist, and sometimes a neurosurgeon, identifies the target, selects the dose and approves the plan.
• The dosimetrist and medical physicist design and verify the beam arrangement and dose.
• A planning CT and brain MRI help define the target accurately.
• A fitted thermoplastic mask keeps the head in a precise, repeatable position. Tell the team before simulation if you are claustrophobic.

Before the First Treatment

Follow the eating, drinking and medication instructions provided by the care team. Some patients may receive medicines for swelling, nausea or anxiety. Follow-up timing and imaging are individualized according to the diagnosis and treatment plan.

During Treatment

• You are positioned with the mask and support devices used during planning.
• X-ray and cone-beam CT images verify alignment before, and sometimes during, treatment.
• The treatment table may be adjusted in several directions to correct small positioning differences.
• The team can see and hear you throughout treatment.

After Treatment

Fatigue, headache, nausea or treatment-related swelling may occur after treatment and vary in duration. Follow medication instructions closely and report new or worsening neurologic symptoms promptly.
